About the Opera

Based on Kawabatas last published novel, the narrative resides in a world of memory and imagination, of fiction and reality. It explores the relationships between a successful novelist, an accomplished classical painter, and her student, a beautiful abstract artist with a wild and unruly heart. In this tale of intense passion and pure love, of jealousy and revenge, Kawabata evokes all the beauty and sadness that comes with the human condition, of what it means to love and be loved.

About the Presenter

C5 Projects Limited is a Hong Kong company, founded by Vina Cheng, with the aim to create a platform for our own young talented artists in Hong Kong by giving them an opportunity to work with established international Masters in creating new works.

In Hong Kong, many home groomed, talented young musicians, singers, dancers and designers, when leaving universities or training academies are often faced with very limited job opportunities where they can put their talent to full use. Many find themselves taking on jobs purely to make a living rather than pursuing their artistic dreams. For the really talented, their career path is very unfortunately often compromised. This production will be a true collaboration of international talents and a demonstration of the most meaningful path of creating from ground zero. We hope that this opera 'Beauty and Sadness', to be premiered in Hong Kong in April 2019, will bring something meaningful to our local artists as well as a chance to promote them to the wider world.
